SHOWING OF MARIA HENLE’S COLOR ETCHINGS

St. Croix artist Maria Henle will have a special holiday showing of her color etchings beginning Dec.15.
The work represents 10 years of the artist's career as a fine art printmaker working at New York City's Printmaking Workshop. During that time Henle mastered the technique of color etching, in her words "a classic printmaking process through which I create my art by etching the image into metal plates, applying the various colored inks by hand onto the etched plates, and manually printing each individual impression from those plates on fine French printmaking paper, using an etching press.
"Each numbered impression from the original plates is a unique image in the strictly limited edition. It is a very physical, hands-on, laborious, challenging, and totally satisfying process for those rare artists determined, obsessed, and passionate enough to pursue it!" Henle said.
Etching is NOT a reproduction process: the "original" in this case is the metal plate, painstakingly created by hand, from which the prints are pulled. The resulting works on paper have a unique quality that no other medium can duplicate; the value of the signed and numbered prints increases over time, and they are much sought after by collectors.
Henle was a dedicated printmaker for 15 years, having learned the craft while at school in Florence, Italy. Her prints are part of many private, corporate and public collections. She has been the recipient of the prestigious New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship for her work, as well as numerous other awards and prizes.
Of the nearly forty images on display, some are the last available impressions of limited editions that have sold out. Many images still in inventory will be offered at special holiday prices. For those familiar with Maria Henle's etchings, this retrospective show will be a look at some lovely prints not seen for years. For others, it will be a lavish introduction to a master etcher and her art.
The exhibition opens on Dec. 15, from 5 to 9 p.m., and continues through Dec. 24. The public is cordially invited to attend this special event.
