The women’s club is a grassroots community organization whose purpose is to encourage and supporting women in leadership and political roles. It is also known for its scholarship program as well as other community initiatives. It has decided to expand its community outreach by facilitating a school uniform exchange drive.
“There are many families that struggle to get their children all that they need to start a new school year, and this includes school uniforms. We wanted to be a part of the solution to some of these needs,” Bakr said.
NHWDC has partnered with local pharmacist Dr. Kisha Christian of Neighborhood Pharmacy, which is no stranger to community philanthropy and hosts its own community initiative called “Back to School Backpack Give Away.”
The launch of the uniform exchange has commenced with the delivery of decorated boxes that will act as receptacles for the school uniforms. Families with used, clean, neat school uniforms that are no longer in use are asked to drop these off at Neighborhood Pharmacy from Aug. 12-19, during business hours. Parents that need uniforms can pick up the gently used uniforms starting Saturday, Aug. 19.
“We plan on doing more in respect to assisting our families on St. Croix. as a community organization, that is what we should be doing,” said Bakr.
