People of all ages experience a fall from time to time, but as they get older, the results of a fall pose a serious health risk. Falls are a leading cause of injury for older adults. One out of every two people over 70 experience a fall each year and (such an event) more commonly requires medical attention or a trip to the hospital. In addition, many older adults become much more sedentary as they age because of their fear of falling leading to more physical and psychological problems.
The St. Croix Senior Collaborative is offering a class called “A Matter of Balance” to residents 60 or older on St. Croix. The training class consists of eight two-hour sessions. The goal is to significantly decrease the number of falls experienced by participants in the class and through cognitive-restructuring activities, assist participants in getting over their fear of falling and resume healthy, age-appropriate and health-appropriate activities.
The training course is an evidenced-based program that was developed by Roybal Center of Boston University. It has been widely distributed through 41 states and is now being offered on St Croix. It is the goal of the program to offer 30 classes to the public during 2017.
Two classes are being offered in the next month. A four-week class will be held from 9-11 a.m., Mondays and Thursdays, beginning June 12, at Beach Side Café in Frederiksted.
Another class will be held from 9-11 a.m., Wednesday, May 24, at the AARP Office across from Sunny Isle Shopping Center. The class will run for eight weeks.
Pre-registration is required because a limit of 12 people per class is set. Call 690-3002 or e-mail BalanceSTX@gmail.com for more information.
Classes are offered for no charge thanks to a generous grant from the Bennie and Martha Benjamin Foundation with further support from AARP – Virgin Islands, Continuum Care Inc., Massabesic Health Resources VI, The Turning Point Senior Care, St. Croix Senior Collaborative, and Billy D’s BBQ Grill & Catering.
The mission of the St. Croix Senior Collaborative, a non-profit organization affiliated with the St. Croix Foundation, is to develop and deliver programs, services, and events in support of senior residents on St Croix.
