Young Runners Take Command at the Paradise 5K on May 4

The start of the Paradise 5K 2017

At the 29th running of the Paradise 5K that took place at 6 p.m., Thursday, May 4, a group of youths from Good Hope Country Day School and the Virgin Islands Triathlon Federation served notice that they will be the next generation of V.I. triathletes. The St. Croix race was one of the famous three-sport endurance events, America’s Paradise Triathlon.

It has been one of the introductory events to the triathlon on St. Croix, second only to the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, according Wallace Williams of the V.I.Pace Runners.

“Renny Roker, the founder of the triathlon, conceived the idea to promote St. Croix and the triathlon by offering these kinds of activities days leading up to the big triathlon.  The first year, we held a relay run around the Sunny Isle Center; we had the King St. Dash in Christiansted which until 19 years ago [it] was open to all ages.  Now it’s called the Children Run Christiansted… color run.  The Paradise 5K used to be held on Sunday afternoon a week before the triathlon when the triathletes would travel to St. Croix like 10 days to two weeks early to get acclimated to the challenging conditions presented by the race. The course was Southgate to Christiansted,” said Williams.

The small group of visiting and local runners toed the start line of the beautiful and challenging Buccaneer Resort course, which is the same route for the triathlon.  Youth triathlete Dominic Puglise of Good Hope Country Day School took the lead early on with former multiple winner, 38-year old Billy Bohlke, in the group, to win the race with a time of 19:08; Mickey Dizon-Bauman and Brice Richards also of GHCD finished second and third with times of 19:39 and 20:04, respectively; Bohlke passed by Richards with less than 500 meters to the finish, was fourth in 20:18; Randel Nielsen of St. Croix was the fifth male in 22:22.

New mom and multiple V.I. marathon and 50-mile champion Bridget Klein is back as she claimed first place for females and fifth overall with a time of 20:18; Jennifer Hyde from Canada and longtime official timer for the Triathlon was second in 23:30; Savanah Logan of St. Croix was third in 24:32; Jamie Schmidt of St. Croix and Tamara Cracknell of Saratoga, Calif., were given a tie for fourth place in 27:49; Kira Lambert of St. Croix was fifth in 30:28.
