Cohen Named New GERS Retiree Trustee

Former government employee Stephen Cohen has been selected to complete the term of Judge Edgar Ross on the board of trustees of the V.I. Government Employee Retirement System, GERS announced Monday.

Ross resigned for personal reasons effective March 31. Cohen will serve through March 16, 2020, which is the remainder of Ross’ term.

Three people applied, but two were disqualified, leaving Cohen.

According to GERS, former Sen. Adelbert Bryan was disqualified because he did not meet the educational requirements set in V.I. law for the position. V.I. law specifies that “(w)ith the exception of the two members from the Central Labor Council and the Director of Personnel, members of the Board of Trustees shall have at least five years experience and a[t] least a bachelor’s degree in any of the following: investment banking; economics; finance; insurance; law; medicine; accounting; actuarial science; taxation; real estate appraisal or brokerage and securities trading.”

Adel Allen was also disqualified because she did not submit the required completed petition by the deadline date and time, according to GERS.
