Flood Danger Upgraded for STX

The National Weather Service upgraded its flood danger assessment for St. Croix Sunday, issuing a flood advisory for the island effective through 6:45 p.m. Sunday,

Locations that will experience flooding include Grove Place, Frederiksted South, Christiansted and Frederiksted, according to the NWS.

The weather service on Thursday declared a flash flood watch effective through Sunday evening for the entire territory and portions of Puerto Rico. In upgrading the danger threat, the service noted Doppler radar indicated heavy rain will cause urban and small stream flooding in the advisory area. As much as one inch of rain had fallen as of noon.

The V.I. Emergency Management Agency reminded drivers, “Turn around, don`t drown,” when encountering flooded roads, noting that in flash floods most deaths occur in vehicles.

Editor’s note: This story has been updated to include the extension of the flood advisory until 6:45 p.m.
