V.I. Bureau of Internal Revenue Extends Hours for Filing Tax Returns

The Virgin Islands Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) reminds the public that the deadline for filing the 2016 individual income tax returns is Tuesday, April 18.  Taxpayers are also reminded they cannot file their returns using the e-filing option, according to Director of the BIR Marvin L. Pickering.

BIR’s offices on St. Thomas and St. Croix will have extended hours for the convenience of the taxpayers based on the following schedule:

On St. Croix, the extended office hours are:

7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 12, and

7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Tuesday, April 18

On St. Thomas, the extended office hours and locations are:

Red Hook, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 12, and

7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Tuesday, April 18

Nisky Center, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 12, and

7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Tuesday, April 18

On St. John, the office will remain open until 5 p.m.to accommodate the taxpayers on Wednesday, April 12 and Tuesday, April 18.

Taxpayers who are unable to file their 2016 returns by the April 18th due date are reminded they can file an extension by using Form 4868.  To obtain approval of the extension, the taxpayer must properly estimate the tax liability due and file the form no later than April 18. The extension is only for the filing of the tax return.  Taxpayers who owe taxes must pay the tax due on April 18 to avoid the failure to pay a penalty.

Questions about the extended office hours should be directed to Tamarah Parson-Smalls at 715-1040, ext. 2249.
