Baha’is Fast for 19 Days in March to Bring in the New Year

The Baha’i community of the Virgin Islands joined five million Baha’is worldwide in an annual period of fasting and celebrating, March 1-20.  For 19 days, Baha’is abstain from food and drink during the daylight hours, sunrise to sunset.

Like Lent in Christianity and Ramadan in Islam, the Baha’i Fast is essentially a period of meditation and prayer when the individual reflects on his or her own spiritual life. The fast culminates on the first day of spring and begins the Baha’i New Year. Celebrations will be held on St. Croix at the Rotary Club in Frederiksted and on St. Thomas at the Baha’i Center.

At a time when the world news seems preoccupied with acts of violence and negative forces, the Baha’i community is quietly striving to build bonds of unity and understanding between peoples of all ages, races, ethnicities, socio-economic status and religions. To be part of this discussion, contact the Baha’is where you live.
