Ground Strokes Tennis Club Adopts Five Public Schools

Ground Strokes Tennis Club has adopted four elementary schools and one junior high School in 2017, offering children club scholarships to expose them to tennis.

The club has partnered with Alexander Henderson, Eulalie Rivera, Alfredo Andrews, and Claude O. Markoe elementary schools and Arthur A. Richards junior high school on St. Croix to bring the principles of teamwork, discipline, healthy living and sportsmanship to the students through the game of tennis.

Ground Strokes approached the principals of the five schools and their response reinforced the need for such a program, according Devon Peters, head coach.

“We are excited to be able to expand our program and reach more kids directly in the schools,” said Peters. “This opportunity to spread the game of tennis, a sometimes expensive sport, will prove beneficial to our club as well as the children we have a chance to positively impact.”

“While tennis is not a traditional sport, there are opportunities for students to compete locally, regionally and nationally. With the proper guidance and development, we already have children in the program on track for potential college scholarship opportunities, and we want to offer that opportunity to more kids,” said Peters.

Ground Strokes Tennis Club Inc. is a non-profit organization formed to make tennis available to every youth who wants to play, while teaching in a fun, learning environment and stressing the importance of good sportsmanship and fair play.
